Storyline Quality (Serenity)
It seems that movies today go for the instant gratification. There is not much thought to deeper issues. Not only that, but when they make a movie that seems to be successful, they make reams or sequels to monopolize on what appears to be a good formula. Movie makers are afraid to take risks. This formula approach may work for some viewers (like kids for example), but I think the general public wants more (they might not realize it yet, though). That’s why it is so nice (and rare) to see a movie like Serenity come along. This storyline takes risks. It makes people feel unsafe, so that when the movie is over they get a stronger buzz from it. The risk, of course, is that not as many people may like that feeling of not being safe. Surely there will be some that feel that way, but isn’t it worth it to get the opportunity to make a movie that has actual original ideas in it, and makes people truly feel. A movie like that puts the viewer in the story, rather than just watching from the side lines. As much as I enjoyed Serenity, and Firefly for that matter, I am OK with them not making a sequel. Let it end on a high note, and spend the energy making another brand new film with a great story and lots of emotional risk.
